Flixya & Metacafe - Perfect Companions?

07/19/2007 / other

I have been making & uploading videos to first google video & shortly after youtube for over a year now. During that time I created over 100 original videos. many were just experiments that I pulled shortly after due to bad reviews, poor views or excessive copyright issues. I have about 50 still online.

It was a fun process learning video editting. The reason I kept at it was that I felt that if I could create some decent content then it might create a snow abll effect. I was wooed by the promises that both Googlevideo & youtube made, saying that they would someday start paying people for thier content. Both compaies let me down by welching on the promises. When I first started with google video they even had a section that when you uploaded the video that you could set a price for your video and they said that although it wasnt working yet that soon the average Joe would be able to sell videos. I thought that sounded great. Never happened. Then they bought youtube. When that happened rumers went around that they would start to share the ad proceeds with the video creators. Never happened. (actually I guess it did, but only for the superstars like lonelygirl15 and the like) But never happened for me anyways.

To date I have had about 350,000 views on my videos all combined. not great, but not bad, as I was just learning etc. I am actually quite happy with that number for now. But a couple months ago I started to feel that those views had more or less gone to waste. Youtube was starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth after what I feel are broken promises. Anyways so I started looking at other options once again. I went back to Metacafe and had another look. to my suprise they seem to have a relativly thriving community. Not near as large as youtube, but not bad. AND THEY PAY! Now they only pay for original content, that has no copyright issues, so I went to work and removed soundtracks etc and replaced with public domain music and started uploading there. Alas the videos that I have that fit into that criteria are kinda lame but its a start. And has lead to a plan for me.

Anyways back to the title of this article, I think that Flixya & Metacafe make perfect companions because it is kind of killing 2 birds with one stone. Get paid for the video views from metacafe (20,000 pays $100, and $5 every 1000 after that) and get ad revenue from flixya/google interface. One of my videos has about 8500 views after a month so that about $50. Not bad so far from a site that I hardly noticed until recently.

I have a few other plans that I am going to incorporate soon on this quest to make video money online :)

Just subscribe to this Flixya blog, and I will keep you updated on the progress.

Feel free to post suggestions, observations and comments. Also if you have a video on Metacafe in thier producer awards send me the link, and I will have a look. Every view counts :)

Peace.
