Video: Crash of the Titans Gameplay Footage
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Crash Bandicoot has been around for what seems like forever, but hasn't really been all that relevant for...well, what seems like forever. Sure, his games kept selling, but they'd been stuck in a rut of ho-hum by the numbers platforming and kart racing for years. Based on this footage, however, it appears that Crash of the Titans might not actually suck. The levels remind me somewhat of Jak and Daxter and commanding big-ass creatures to do your bidding is always a good time.

Hitman Trailer Features Baby-Faced Agent 47
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

In case you didn't have plans to see Live Free or Die Hard this week, here's the Hitman trailer. The music is perfect, but I'm really not so sure about Timothy Olyphant. He looks far too young and skinny to be Agent 47, don't you think? Agent 47 oozes bad-ass from every pore of his being, and I'm just not getting that sense from Mr. Deadwood. I still think they should've gone with Jason Statham.

Unravel The Bourne Conspiracy on 360, PS3
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Sierra has joined with Ludlum Entertainment to bring Robert Ludlum's The Bourne Conspiracy to the Xbox 360 and PS3 next Summer. Using both the book and the movie versions of The Bourne Identity as its inspiration, Conspiracy will clue players in to Jason Bourne's true identity and reveal the moment that turned him into the amnesiac weapon that he has become.

Fans of the franchise will recognize key incidents and characters from the franchise, but there will be all-new story elements added, as well.

Judging by the screenshot, Matt Damon won't be taking on the role of Bourne for the game, which is kind of shame since he did such an excellent job of portraying him in the movies.

Microsoft: HD-DVD Drive is 360's "Biggest Selling Accessory"
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Speaking to CNET UK, Microsoft called the HD-DVD drive is the 360's "biggest selling accessory," though what they mean by that is a bit unclear.

It seems fairly unlikely that more of those have sold than, say, Play & Charge kits or extra controllers, so they're probably referring to revenue, which, given the 155,000 that have sold in the US so far, is a nice chunk of change.

Or maybe they just mean actual size. It is kinda on the big side for an accessory, after all.

Game Adjusts Difficulty Based on Heart Rate
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Researchers at the University of Udine in Italy have developed a game system that adjusts its difficulty based on the player's heart rate. The player straps on a "pulseoxymeter" sensor, then moves around to play the game, which includes a heart monitor. Check out the video, it'll all make more sense.

The games are rather simplistic at this point, of course, and the mechanics to actually play are ungainly, but conceptually it's a great idea.  I particularly like the "knee bends" game; just imagine the workout you'd get playing a Treasure shooter that way.

New Zealand Cop Blames Kids' Crime Spree on Video Games
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Two New Zealand 14-year-olds stole a car, led cops on a chase, later shot at them, and tried to steal a squad car--none of which they would've done if it weren't for video game, figures Inspector Karl Wright St Clair. "It was like one of those video games the kids play where they steal a car and shoot at police," he said. As reported by Stuff:

Aske d if he was making a direct link between video games and yesterday's incident, he said: "Well, they don't come up with these things by themselves."

TwoStick Speeds Up Game Pad Text Entry
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Entering text with a traditional game pad is hard, and the clumsy interfaces provided by Microsoft and Sony don't help, either. This interface, called TwoStick, promises to speed things up quite a bit: users who practiced on TwoStick went faster than the traditional keyboard, and also reported it as being "more fun." Developed by researchers at the Vienna University of Technology and the University of Tampere.

Bit of Berlin Wall Included in Collector's Edition of World in Conflict
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

We're used to all sorts of doodads being included in the special editions of games--soundtracks, figurines, matchbooks, t-shirts--but the extras in the World in Conflict Collector's Edition for PC has them all beat. In addition to special packaging and a DVD from The History Channel, it will also contain a genuine piece of the Berlin Wall.

World in Conflict is an action/strategy game based on the premise that the Cold War never ended, and the Super Powers are still battling it out. (In case you were wondering, the Berlin Wall wasn't torn down in World in Conflict's universe, it was "obliterated by the collateral damage of the opening salvos of World War III.") To be honest, I'm  torn between thinking this is highly neato and wildly inappropriate. Also, how do they prove it's a real piece of the Wall?

Warhawk Beta Extended To July 2
DATE: 08/06/2007 / MOOD: in love

Sony sends word that the beta for their online flying/driving/on-foot multiplayer battle extravaganza Warhawk will be extended to July 2.

So if you're one of the many having a grand old time shooting the other twelve PlayStation 3 owners out of the sky, that's one more week of mayhem.

I thought Warhawk was pretty good, but so much of the final appeal of the product is going to depend on pricing -- and how many people actually buy it when it is released. When is it coming out, anyway?
